September 11 Blood Donation

I started donating blood while in college and try to donate at least 4 times a year.  I never realized just how important it was until several years ago when my dad needed blood over a holiday weekend and there was trouble getting what he needed.  I have made it a point the last few years to try to schedule my donations around holiday weekends. Since we are always out of town on Labor Day, I try to schedule it for the following week.  A few years ago it occured to  me that there was no better way to honor those that lost their lives than by giving blood on September 11th.  This was my fourth year giving blood on this day, it is a tradition that I plan on continuing.  If you have never given blood, it is painless, doesn't take long and can save someones life.

That's an awesome tradition, and a very appropriate way of honoring the fallen.
I can't give blood anymore because I went to school overseas a million years ago and now I'm a Mad Cow risk. I call them every few months to see if they've changed the rules (they took well over a gallon after I returned and before instituting this rule) but so far no luck. I loved donating, it was quick and easy, I got free snacks and I always felt like I'd done my good deed for the day!

Great tradition....

After the OKC Murrah Building explosion, the call went out in OKC for blood. We waited in lines forever. When I finally got into the building, I was denied since I was just 6 months coming back from Africa. I didn't realize that taking all those drugs and vacinations would disqualify you!

That aside, the local blood institute tests your blood and send you the test results - cheap way to find out your HDL/LDL scores!

This is one of the best ideas ever! It's been several years since I donated blood. Maybe, I'll make it a goal for the holiday season.
